A connective tissue graft (CTG) sounds a lot more complicated than it is. When we tell our patients at our dental clinic in Coral Springs, FL, that CTG would be a good option for them, many of them panic. Despite the presence of the term “graft,” it’s still a fairly simple procedure.

What is a Connective Tissue Graft (CTG) Dental Procedure?
A connective tissue graft is a gum transplant where we remove gum tissue from one area of your mouth to over your teeth. This is a common procedure done for people with receding gums, which can affect their smiles and cause increased sensitivity to hot and cold foods.
The graft is taken from the roof of the mouth and is sutured to the gum tissue covering the teeth. With time, everything will heal, and your teeth will be properly covered by gum tissue. The procedure is done in-office under general anesthesia. You’ll only feel slight pressure but no pain and will be able to go home when it’s over.
There’s not much you can do to prepare for a CTG. Make sure a friend or family member accompanies you to the office so they can drive you home as you might be a little sedated or tired afterward. After the procedure, we’ll give you a list of instructions you should follow to ensure proper healing.
Complications of Connective Tissue Graft (CTG)
There are a few complications associated with a connective tissue graft. These include bleeding, swelling, infection, sensitive teeth, and teeth feeling loser. With time, most of these will subside. If you suspect you’re developing an infection, however, contact us straight away.
Some people aren’t satisfied with the way their teeth look after the surgery. This can easily be dealt with as we reshape the gum tissue. If the graft doesn’t attach or heal properly, repeat surgery might be needed. Make an appointment with dentist near you.
