What is Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR)?

Guided tissue regeneration is a surgical procedure used to strengthen the bone, supporting the teeth to prevent tooth loss. It is recommended when this bone has been damaged or destroyed, usually as a result of periodontal disease. The purpose of this procedure is to stimulate the growth of bone and gum tissue in the mouth to better support the teeth. Performed in combination with flap surgery, a small piece of mesh-like fabric will be inserted between the bone and gum tissue. This will prevent the gum tissue from growing where the bone should be, encouraging the healthy regeneration of bone and connective tissue.

Why is Guided Tissue Regeneration Needed?

The bone supporting the teeth can become weakened as a result of periodontal disease, or gum disease. Gum disease can begin when plaque (the colorless, sticky substance that forms on the teeth) is left to remain for long periods of time. Plaque contains bacteria and can harden into tartar, which cannot be removed by brushing and flossing. The bacteria that live in tartar produce acids that attack the teeth and gums.

The early form of gum disease is called gingivitis, and it can be treated fairly easily before much damage occurs. If the disease is not caught early, however, or it is not treated promptly, additional damage can occur. How is the Procedure Performed?

Your dentist will access the area under the gums through a procedure called flap surgery. It will be cleaned of bacterial deposits before the artificial membrane is placed between the gum tissue and bone. The gums will then be stitched closed over the area.
